I’ve finally posted pictures of some of the highlights I’ve already written about as well as new things from Greece. I don’t have much time now, but since I last wrote we saw ancient sites and relaxed on the island of Crete before taking an overnight ferry (sadly, not a cruise this time) to the mainland.
Yesterday we saw the amazing sites of Mycenae, from around 1200 BC, and Epidaurus, home to a 15,000 seat theater with absolutely perfect acoustics. Last night we explored the cute town of Nafplion, and this morning we got to explore the Castle of Palamidi with incredible views of the ocean and city below.
Then we drove for about three hours to Olympia, where we raced in the stadium of the original Olympic games. As if that wasn’t enough, we went shopping tonight and started talking to a lady at her jewelry store because our professor had been there earlier in the day and she wanted to give a discount to the students. She told us her brother was a runner for Greece in four Olympics and that he was a torch carrier for the Olympics in Atlanta.
Then she showed us an actual Olympic torch, and we got to hold it and take our picture with it. It was surreal! When we left her shop, it was raining outside, a welcome site for us Arizonans who haven’t seen rain all trip and were teased by storm clouds yesterday and this morning.
I’m going to bed now, but I have fallen in love with Greece and will try to write more soon! Off to Delphi in the morning :)
