We spent two nights on the island of Rhodes, visiting a few sites and enjoying the cute shops and pleasant environment of the city around our hotel. From there, we were supposed to take an overnight ferry to the island of Crete. As our bus pulled up to the dock, we saw really big ships and found out that one of them was ours. We were still expecting a ferry, so we just figured the ship could hold a lot of people. After we got onboard, however, we realized that our “overnight ferry” was actually a CRUISE!!!
We joked that we were the stowaways because we were only on board for one night while everyone else was in the middle of their actual vacations on the cruise for many days. We spent a little while wondering what we were doing there, trying to find our most formal clothes to wear to dinner, and being excited about studying abroad on a cruise ship :-) but we quickly got acclimated to life on a cruise.
We enjoyed a five course meal, sang karaoke, and danced the night away with our professor at the moonlight disco. So much for being stuck on a small ferry and getting a good night’s sleep! I actually did sleep well with the rocking of the boat, but after our night I certainly did not like my alarm going off at 5:50 am so we could meet our bus at 7:30.
So there you have it, my first cruise. And hopefully my shortest, as we were on the ship for about 15 hours. But what a fun 15 hours they were!
