We left Istanbul on Tuesday to spend about a week in the Turkish countryside. I slept for most of the bus ride, but I did catch glimpses of cows, horses, and goats among the rolling hills during our trip. While I missed certain aspects of the big city at first, staying near the beach has its advantages as well.
First, we travelled to Canakkale, visiting memorials for the Battle of Gallipoli between the British and Ottoman Empires during World War I. The campaign is noted as the catalyst for the formation of the respective national identities of Turkey, Australia, and New Zealand. (Of course I thought of you, S Wolfenstein!) Yesterday we took a trip to the site of Troy, learning about the strategic location of the place and seeing remnants of the defense walls, roads, and structures.
Today we drove to the resort town of Kusadasi, stopping to visit sites at Pergamon on the way here. Tomorrow we’ll visit Ephesus before heading to Bodrum, our last stop in Turkey, in a few days. Pictures to come soon!
